Give away, sell or donate

Books may be given away, sold or donated. Do not donate damaged or moldy books. See book donation opportunities on the Choose to Reuse website.

Other disposal options

Recycle paperback books

Paperback books may be recycled in your recycling program at home.

Put hardcover books in garbage

Hardcover books should be put in the garbage. They are not accepted for recycling because their binding makes them difficult to recycle.

Please note: the City of Minneapolis does accept hardcover books in curbside recycling. Check with your waste hauler.

Remove battery from battery-operated books

Remove batteries, electronic components and wires from battery operated books, then recycle the paper in your recycling program at home. Recycle the battery at a Hennepin County drop-off facility.

If you cannot remove the battery, bring the whole book to a Hennepin County drop-off facility.

Do not throw battery operated books into the trash.
