Creativity on display

Artwork from Hennepin County’s 2025 student art contest is now on display in the Hennepin County Gallery in the lower level of the Government Center until June 5.
Last December, students in grades 6–12 who live or attend school in Hennepin County were invited to submit artwork inspired by the theme Belonging Begins Here. The theme reflects the county’s commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive community for everyone.

From the many submissions received, 35 finalists were chosen. The artwork represents a wide range of styles and ideas, showing how young people understand belonging and community. The winning artwork was displayed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) in March and April, before moving to the Government Center.
Hennepin County and the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) hosted a reception to celebrate the finalists in March. Students, families, teachers, and supporters came together to view the artwork, hear remarks from county leaders, and recognize the creativity of young people across the county. It was the first event of its kind for Hennepin County and offered a chance for students to see their work displayed in a major museum.
"This year's theme, Belonging Begins Here, is more important now than ever. Every person in our community deserves to feel like they belong – in their city, in their county, in their state, and in their country," said Hennepin County Commissioner Heather Edelson in her remarks to the students.
Hennepin County thanks the students, families, teachers, employees, and partners who helped make this first contest a success. We also thank Mia for partnering with us and providing a space to showcase these talented artists.
