State of the County Address highlights power of community

Hennepin County Board Chair Dr. Irene Fernando recently delivered the 2026 State of the County Address at the 625 Building Auditorium. The event brought together state, county, city, and community leaders, and partners from across Hennepin County to reflect on the past year and to recommit to shared goals for the year ahead.
Chair Fernando centered the address on the idea that community is the heartbeat of the county’s work, grounding the speech in shared values, equity and the importance of designing People First services and supporting residents especially during hardships.
The program on May 14 began with remarks from County Administrator Jodi Wentland, followed by a blessing from LeMoine LaPointe, one of the original contributors to the Dakota Land and Water Acknowledgement, and his son. Commissioners then presented the Dakota Land and Water Acknowledgement. Community choir Known MPLS, based in North Minneapolis, also performed throughout the program.
This year’s theme, “For the Power of Community,” guided Chair Fernando’s message. She highlighted how shared strength, responsibility and partnerships continue to advance the county’s work. “A strong community doesn’t ignore tough realities. It faces them with intention and asks what we can do together,” said Chair Fernando.

County leaders were joined by local government officials from across the county for the annual event.
Chair Fernando recognized the work of county employees who support residents every day. “Your commitment, resolve and care make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents, both directly and indirectly,” she said.
She also spoke about the importance of Employee Resource Groups at Hennepin County, stating they “bolster our employee community by facilitating connection, belonging and professional growth.” Adding they also “support the county’s mission of serving residents equitably.”
