Adult mental health local advisory council
This council advises the County Board, County Administration, and other agencies about policy, programs and services affecting persons with mental illness; to advocate for persons with serious mental illness; and to monitor, review, and evaluate mental health services with the County.
Members of the public and local officials can be appointed to serve on this council.

Structure
The County Board appoints 23 eligible members with minority representation, geographical distribution, and individuals that represent various segments of the mental health system. Preference is given to Hennepin County residents.
This includes up to:
- Six consumers
- Six family members
- Six mental health service providers
- Five at large
The commissioners may appoint 1 or more "alternate" appointments to ensure participation of interested citizens when the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of vacancies.
Eligibility
- At large - mental health advocates and individuals with expertise in the needs and issues of groups underserved by the mental health system.
- Consumer - individual with lived experience of mental illness.
- Family members - family members of individuals with lived mental health experience.
- Mental health provider - mental health professionals or practitioners who work in settings such as community support programs, case management, outpatient, hospital and crisis programs and other services that make-up the local community mental health system.
Term
- Three years.
- Begins the year of appointment.
- January 1 through December 31.
- Limit of 2 terms.
Responsibilities
- Attend monthly Local Advisory Council meetings. Your attendance and voice count.
- Make recommendation on mental health services to the County Commissioners.
- Develop unmet mental health needs statement for County Board, administration and mental health grant and service planning.
- Receive input on coordination of care between the Regional Treatment Center and Hennepin County community-based services annually.
Meetings
Meetings are held from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of each month.
Meetings are open to the public. Voting is restricted to members.
Compensation
Members can get
- Stipends for each meeting attended - up to 2 meetings a month
- Mileage reimbursement
