Campaign finance
Campaign finance committees are how campaigns report financial activity.
Candidate committees for the following Hennepin County offices file campaign finance reports with us.
- County commissioner
- County sheriff
- County attorney
- Three rivers park commissioners
City and school district offices
- Candidate committees file with their city office.
- Political committees file with the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board.
Reporting schedule
Certification of filing
All candidate committees must file this within 7 days of a general or special election in which their name is on the ballot.
Reports
Once a candidate committee raises or spends more than $750, it must file the following reports until it files a final report.
Initial report
An initial report must be filed within 14 days after a candidate raises or spends more than $750.
Additional reports are required once an initial report is filed.
Additional required reports
In an election year - (the candidate’s name is on the ballot) additional reports are required to be filed:
- 10 days before the primary or special primary.
- Reporting period: from when the previous report left off until 15 days before the primary or special primary
- 10 days before the general election or special election.
- Reporting period: from when the previous report left off until 15 days before the general election or special election.
- 30 days after a general election or special election.
- Reporting period: from 15 days before through 25 days after the general or special election.
- By January 31 of each year following the year when the initial report was filed.
- Reporting period: from when the previous report left off until December 31.
In a non-election year - By January 31 of each year following the year when the initial report was filed.
- Reporting period: from when the previous report left off until December 31.
Final report
A final report may be filed at any time after the candidate has settled all debts and has a cash balance of $100 or less.
To indicate a final report check “final report” under “type of report”. Submitting a final report ends campaign reporting activity.

Submit reports by mail, email or fax.
Statement of economic interest
Elected and appointed local or public officials of metropolitan governmental units and judges must file.
The statement discloses certain relationships and sources of income.
It must be filed each January you remain in your position.
