Building material reuse grants
The grant application forms are available from March 23 until November 1, 2026 or when funds are depleted.

Residential deconstruction grants
Funding for residential properties built prior to 1970 to deconstruct building materials for reuse.
Up to $5,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) based on eligible deconstruction expenses for residential full building removal or renovation/remodeling projects.
Who can apply
Property owners and developers.
Property type
Residential property up to 4 units built prior to 1970; project size at least 500 square feet.
Reuse criteria
You are required to deconstruct or reuse materials from the approved materials list (PDF, 1MB).
- A minimum of five different materials must be deconstructed.
- At least 1,000 pounds of lumber materials must be deconstructed for reuse.
- All non-reusable building material generated from the project must be sent to a recycling facility that achieves a minimum 60% recycling rate. Find construction and demolition recycling facilities
- Must provide documentation verifying reuse criteria was met to receive grant funds.
- An asbestos survey must be conducted and any asbestos-containing materials must be properly abated. Find a Minnesota Department of Health licensed asbestos contractor

Commercial deconstruction grants
Funding for commercial properties, including multi-family apartment buildings over 4 units, to deconstruct building materials for reuse.
Up to $10,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) based on eligible deconstruction expenses for commercial full building removal or renovation/remodeling projects.

Used building material installation
Funding to install used building materials in remodel, renovation, and new construction projects to close the loop and reduce waste and embodied energy associated with new materials.
Up to $5,000 available per project (up to $2 per square foot) that incorporate used building materials into addition, renovation, remodeling, or new construction designs.
Used building material installation funds may be used in conjunction with a deconstruction grant or a structural move grant upon approval. Applicant must complete separate application for each grant.

- A minimum of five different materials must be installed into project.
- At least 500 pounds of lumber materials must be installed into project.
- Must provide documentation verifying reuse criteria was met to receive grant funds.

Structural move grants
Funding to physically relocate a building to another location, avoiding demolition waste and preserving the cultural and historical integrity of the building.
Up to $15,000 available per project (up to $5 per square foot) based on eligible expenses for full structural move projects.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be a property owner located within Hennepin County.
- Deconstruction of accessory structures (such as garages and sheds) are not eligible for funding.
- Hennepin County does not conduct deconstruction work. Grantee must coordinate deconstruction work with contractors and/or salvage outlets and verify project meets reuse and disposal criteria. Find building material reuse organizations in the Twin Cities.
- Grant funding cannot be used for work that has already been completed. Deconstruction, structural move, and used building material purchases and installation work must take place after the agreement to issue grant funds is established.
- All proposed grant projects must meet all applicable laws, including but not limited to all city, and county zoning, building and fire codes.
- It is the responsibility of the grantee to ensure that any contractors or subcontractors involved in the project are in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Hennepin County reserves the right to accept or reject any applications and/or request additional information as deemed necessary.
