Voter registration
You must be registered to vote in Minnesota.
Update your registration if your name or address changes.
Eligibility
To vote in Minnesota you must be:
- A U.S. citizen
- At least 18 years old on Election Day (16 & 17 year olds can pre-register)
- A resident of Minnesota for 20 days
- Not in jail or prison for a felony conviction
- Not under a court order that revokes your right to vote
Pre-registration for 16 and 17 years old
16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote. When they turn 18, they will be automatically registered.
Register or update registration online
To register online you will need:
- Your Minnesota driver’s license or identification card number, or the last four numbers of your Social Security number
- An email address
- To be eligible to vote in Minnesota
Automatic online registration
Eligible voters will automatically be registered to vote when applying for or renewing:
- Minnesota driver's license
- State ID card
- USPS change of address
- Other state agency benefits or services

You can register at your polling place with proof of residence.
Name and address privacy
Your name and address are public when you register to vote.
If you have safety or privacy concerns, there are ways to register and vote without making your information public.
Safe at Home program
This is an address confidentiality program for those with extreme safety needs.
- All voting is done by absentee ballot through the mail.
- Your name and address are never shared with your local election office.
- Only your marked ballot is counted.
Keep your information private
Your name and address won't be available to members of the public. The information will be on the list of voters at the polling place on Election Day.

Inactivate your voter record
This removes your voter information from the public registered voter list. If required, election officials can still view or update your voter record upon re-registration.
If your record is inactive, you must re-register to vote again.
